Clinical and Bacteriogical Studies on 150 Cases of Spinal Tuberculosis in Children

Abstract
Children who are suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis are favorable to ingestion of sputum and get hematogenous dissemination with tuberculous bacilli.
Bacteriological examination from the gastric washing and urine is very important to make diagnosis and treatment of spinal tuberculosis in children.
Clinical and bacteriological study was performed in 150 cases of spinal tuberculosis in children who were treated by ambulatory treatment.
Chiefly bacteriological investigation was performed in direct concentration and smear(Ziehl-Neelsen method), culture on Ogawa media and sensitivity test with materials like sputum, pus and early morning gastric washing and urine.
The results are summarized as follows:
1) Positive result on direct concentration and smear was 24. 7%(37cases) of all cases with all materials and 48.0%(72cases) on culture.
2) Positive result on direct concentration and smear with each materials was 10%(6 of 53 cases) from sputum, 42.5%(34 of 80 cases) from pus, 0.9%(1 of 112 cases) from gastric washing, and all negative(O of 116 cases) from urine.
3) Positive result on culture with each materials was 18.6%(8 of 43 cases) from sputum, 70.8%(46 of 65 cases) from pus, 16.8%(19 of 113 cases) from gastric washing, and 16.4%(21 of 128 cases) from urine.
4) In correlation between smear and culture positivity with materials we found highest percentage in the case of pus(70. 8%) on culture and lowest in the case of gastric washing(0.9%) and urine(0%) on smear.
5) By both examinations (smear and culture) in 291 times with materials from 150 cases both positive results were seen in 26 times(9. 0%) but 23 times(88.4%) from pus and negative smear but positive culture was seen in 49 times(16.8%) but 18 times(36.7%) from urine and 17 times(34.7%) from gastric washing.
6) Associated percentage with pulmonary tuberculosis of positive cases of materials is higher than otherauthors like 87.5% from sputum, 84.8% from pus, 73.7% from gastric washing and 90.5% from urine while 82. 7% of 150 cases as a whole.
7) In the sensitivity test, each I case of pus and urine under I month of chemotherapy and gastric washing during 2-6 months were resulted in complete resistant to PAS, but other cases were resulted in almost incomplete resistant.
